A printing vendor error split U.S. Senate candidate statements across two sections of the Washington County voters' pamphlet, separated by about 68 pages of county material.
The Washington County Elections Division posted a notice Friday, Oct. 9, explaining that the county insert was placed in the wrong spot within the state voters' pamphlet. One Senate candidate's statement appears on page 30, before the insert. The remaining candidates' statements appear on page 31, after it.
No content was lost or altered, the division said. The misplacement means voters flipping through the pamphlet could miss statements if they don't know to check both pages.
The error matters now because ballots go out Wednesday, Oct. 14. Voters across Bethany, Cedar Mill, Oak Hills and West Haven-Sylvan will receive them by mail, and the pamphlet is many residents' primary guide for reviewing candidates before the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election.
Four candidates are listed on the statewide U.S. Senate ballot: incumbent Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley, Republican state Sen. David Brock Smith, Progressive and Pacific Green party candidate Chris Henry and Libertarian Gary Lyndon Dye, according to KGW. The county's notice refers to statements from three candidates. One candidate may not have submitted a pamphlet statement, though the county did not specify which.
Voters who want to see all the statements grouped together can view the online version of the state pamphlet at sos.oregon.gov/elections/Voters-Pamphlet. That version does not include the county insert.
The county notice also directs voters with questions to the Oregon Secretary of State's Office or the Washington County Elections Division. The voter registration deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 13. Voters who haven't received a ballot about a week after Oct. 14 can call Washington County Elections at 503-846-5800. Drop boxes close at 8 p.m. on Election Day.
