A 20-year-old Beaverton man will spend 70 months in prison for shooting his 16-year-old girlfriend in the abdomen at a Southwest Prairie Terrace residence in November 2024, in a case handled by Washington County courts just miles from the Bethany area.
Washington County Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Proctor sentenced Sky Alexander Korbut to five years and 10 months after a jury convicted him of second-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. The Beaverton Police Department announced the sentencing on Thursday, Aug. 6, as KOIN and the Beaverton Valley Times reported.
The sentence is the mandatory minimum under Oregon's Measure 11, which voters passed in 1994 to set fixed prison terms for serious violent crimes. It cannot be reduced by early release or good-time credits.
Officers responded to the SW Prairie Terrace home around 4:55 a.m. on Nov. 21, 2024, after Korbut, then 18, called 911. He told emergency responders he had "accidentally shot" his girlfriend.
The teen was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Korbut was initially arrested on lesser charges of third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. But detectives uncovered additional evidence during their investigation, and the victim herself gave a statement that contradicted Korbut's account, according to the Beaverton Police Department.
A Washington County grand jury subsequently indicted Korbut on the more serious charge of second-degree assault, which carries the Measure 11 mandatory minimum. A week-long jury trial in April 2026 ended with guilty verdicts on both counts.
The sentence is final. Korbut will be transferred to the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his full 70 months with no possibility of early release.
