Bethany Village's free annual Oktoberfest returns Saturday, Sept. 12, with more than 40 vendors, German-inspired food and a stein-holding competition at the shopping complex on NW Bethany Boulevard.
The event runs 1 to 5 p.m. at 4720 NW Bethany Blvd. in Portland. Admission and parking are free.
Headlining the afternoon is the Z Musikmakers, a family band that has been performing together for more than 40 years, according to the Beaverton Valley Times. The group's repertoire includes traditional polkas, big band and party music. The Z Musikmakers have appeared at the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, which the Beaverton Valley Times calls Oregon's top-ranked version of the German celebration.
Two intermissions break up the music. At 3:15 p.m., a stein-holding competition invites contestants to hold a one-liter stein of beer straight out with one arm. The last person standing wins. At 3:45 p.m., Bethany-based Portland Dance Center takes the stage for a showcase performance, according to the Bethany Village event page.
Lazy Days/Bethany Public House and Golden Valley Brewery will pour beer in the Oktoberfest tent. On the food side, Altengartz German Bratwurst and Beezneez Food Truck will serve up German fare, and the event page notes that village restaurants will offer discounts during the afternoon.
Named vendors on the official list include Voodoo Doughnut, Kona Ice, Hygge Chocolates, Rosas Churros and Roasted By Mom Coffee. The Washington County Sheriff's Office will also have a booth.
Kids get face painting, crafts and a bounce house hosted by the Bethany Athletic Club.
The Beaverton Valley Times reported more than 50 vendors are expected, though the official Bethany Village page lists more than 40 by name. Either way, the boulevard will be busy.
