Construction crews are reinforcing Cedar Park and Meadow Park Middle Schools against earthquakes this summer, part of the Beaverton School District's $723 million 2022 Bond program that voters approved in May 2022.
The district said on its website that crews are working to make both schools "more earthquake-safe" but has not detailed the specific engineering scope or cost of the projects. The district has not confirmed whether the work will be complete before students return for the 2026-27 school year on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
Seismic upgrades at BSD schools involve installing lateral force resistance systems, structural reinforcements that keep a building from collapsing during an earthquake, according to the district's facilities development page.
Cedar Park and Meadow Park are two of six middle schools identified for seismic upgrades under the bond. The others are Five Oaks, Highland Park, Mountain View and Whitford, according to earthquake preparedness group Neighbors Ready.
The need is real. In a 2007 state assessment, 13 of Beaverton's 46 schools were rated at "high" risk of collapse in an earthquake, and one, Raleigh Hills Elementary, was rated "very high." Aaron Boyle, the district's administrator for facilities development, told OregonLive in September 2025 that the district chose to replace Raleigh Hills and Beaverton High because they were its most dangerous buildings.
"We won't be done with the work in this bond and it's going to take more bonds to finish," Boyle said in that September 2025 interview. "It takes community support. It takes consistent leadership and direction."
The seismic work at Cedar Park and Meadow Park is one of several summer 2026 bond projects. Others include HVAC upgrades at Sunset High School, an 85-foot mural installation at the new Beaverton High School and summer jobs for students from the Beaverton Academy of Science and Engineering.
The district is also offering public guided tours of the new Raleigh Hills Elementary School, which was rebuilt under the bond and opens this fall. Families can find tour dates on the bond program's tour page.
