A Gresham man faces second-degree kidnapping charges after allegedly stealing a car with a woman inside near Highway 26 and SW Murray Boulevard. The theft led to a high-speed chase through Portland and toward Scappoose.

The incident began around 2:45 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, while Washington County Sheriff's Office deputies were conducting Labor Day weekend DUII enforcement patrols, according to a WCSO press release. A deputy spotted two vehicles speeding west on Highway 26 near SW Murray Boulevard.

When the deputy caught up, the driver of a white Audi tried to flag him down and point toward a black Mercedes. The Audi driver told the deputy the Mercedes had just been stolen outside a Portland bar and that a friend was still inside the vehicle.

Deputies located the Mercedes heading east on Highway 26 toward Portland, traveling at speeds above 100 mph. The pursuit continued through Portland and onto Highway 30 toward Scappoose before the Mercedes ran out of gas.

The passenger was uninjured. She told deputies the driver grabbed her phone when she tried to call for help, according to the WCSO release.

The driver, 27-year-old Tyrone Thompson of Gresham, was booked into the Washington County Jail on seven charges: second-degree kidnapping, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen vehicle, attempting to elude, reckless driving, reckless endangering and criminal mischief. The charges had not been formally filed as of Wednesday, Sept. 9. No attorney for Thompson was identified in available records.

KGW reported that Thompson had an outstanding arrest warrant at the time of the Sept. 4 incident. According to KGW's review of court records, Thompson had been granted supervised release on Aug. 10 in a separate Gresham case but failed to appear for a hearing on Sept. 4, which prompted a new warrant.

KGW also reported that criminal cases in Lane County from 2025 show Thompson was repeatedly found mentally unfit to proceed and was sent for community restoration, a form of behavioral health treatment outside the Oregon State Hospital.

During the broader Labor Day traffic safety mission, WCSO deputies made 448 traffic stops and identified eight impaired drivers.
