Washington County Sheriff's deputies arrested an 81-year-old Rock Creek woman Saturday, July 25, in connection with a hit-and-run crash that left a 74-year-old cyclist in critical condition on NW West Union Road near Bethany.

Kathleen Priepke received a criminal citation for failure to perform the duties of a driver when a person is injured, the charge commonly known as hit and run, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Deputies also seized her 2013 Ford Edge.

What happened

The crash occurred Friday, July 24, just after 4 p.m. at the intersection of NW West Union Road and NW Neakahnie Avenue. A 74-year-old Beaverton man was riding his bicycle eastbound on West Union Road when a westbound SUV turned left in front of him and struck him, the sheriff's office said.

A nurse at the scene provided immediate care. The cyclist was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. The SUV driver did not stop and fled south on NW Neakahnie Avenue.

How deputies identified the suspect

The inter-agency Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team responded to investigate. During the collision, the SUV's side mirror broke off and remained at the scene. Investigators used that mirror to narrow the suspect vehicle to a gray 2011-to-2015 Ford Edge, according to the sheriff's office.

By Saturday, less than 24 hours after the crash, deputies identified Priepke, who lives in the Rock Creek neighborhood close to the intersection where the collision occurred.

What's next

The investigation remains ongoing, according to the sheriff's office. No court date or arraignment has been announced. The cyclist's current condition has not been publicly updated.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office patrols unincorporated areas including Bethany, Cedar Mill, Oak Hills, and West Haven-Sylvan.
