A Washington County grand jury indicted a Beaverton man on six charges after police found hundreds of pieces of suspected stolen mail, 34 credit cards and three U.S. passports in his vehicle.

Joseph Daniel Gregori, 38, faces charges of aggravated identity theft, mail theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, identity theft, possession of a burglary tool and unlawful possession of methamphetamine, according to a Beaverton Police Department statement reported by the Beaverton Valley Times.

The department said investigators have identified numerous potential victims across Oregon and Washington. Officers also recovered counterfeit U.S. Postal Service (USPS) master keys, which could give a thief access to cluster mailboxes in neighborhoods across Washington County, including the Bethany and Cedar Mill areas.

The arrest came Aug. 14 when a Beaverton officer patrolling near the Redwood Creek Apartments on Southwest Windmill Drive recognized Gregori exiting a vehicle. The officer knew Gregori had an outstanding felony warrant tied to burglary, aggravated theft, forgery and conspiracy charges from Clackamas County investigations, the department said.

Gregori was taken into custody without incident.

Police then linked him to the alleged fraudulent use of a victim's credit card, including purchases at GameStop and other businesses, and obtained a search warrant for the vehicle.

The search turned up what investigators described as evidence of mail theft, identity theft and forgery. Among the items: at least 34 credit cards that appeared to have been removed from mail, numerous stolen and altered checks tied to individuals and businesses, three U.S. passports not belonging to Gregori, driver licenses and Social Security cards from multiple alleged victims.

Officers also found approximately 1.8 grams of suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and burglary tools. Thousands of collectible trading cards, including Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering sets, were in the vehicle as well.

The grand jury returned its indictment Aug. 21. Gregori was in custody at the Washington County Jail as of Aug. 31, according to the Beaverton Valley Times. Information from the investigation is being forwarded to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service because of the counterfeit USPS keys and the volume of suspected stolen mail, the department said.
