A confirmed measles exposure at Sky Zone Beaverton on July 18, falls five weeks before Beaverton School District's first day of school.

Oregon law requires vaccination records on file before students return to class on Tuesday, August 25, according to the district calendar.

The exposure site at 10750 S.W. Denney Road sits less than three miles from Westview High School.

The Oregon Health Authority confirmed 32 measles cases statewide as of July 24, with 29 involving people who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unknown. Two Oregonians have been hospitalized.

What the law requires

Oregon law mandates that all K-12 students submit a signed Certificate of Immunization Status form to their school. For students entering grades 7-12, BSD requires two doses of the MMR vaccine along with other required immunizations including DTaP, Tdap, polio, varicella, and hepatitis series, per district policy JHCA. New enrollees must present proof at registration or within 30 days of transfer.

If a measles case is confirmed inside a BSD school, public health officials will exclude every student and staff member who has not demonstrated vaccination or immunity for at least 21 days, the district states on its measles prevention page.

That exclusion applies even to students holding medical or non-medical exemptions and would bar them from all school events.

What families should do

On its measles prevention page, BSD outlines three steps: review your student's immunization status, ensure records are current at your school, and prepare for possible exclusion if your child is not immunized against measles.

The federal Vaccines for Children program provides low- or no-cost shots for children ages 0-18 enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan, uninsured, or American Indian/Alaska Native.

The CIS form is available in multiple languages including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Somali, and Vietnamese through the Oregon Health Authority.

Local schools above herd-immunity threshold

All three area high schools report measles vaccination rates above 98% for the 2025-2026 school year, according to BSD's published immunization data, well above the 93% herd-immunity threshold:

• Westview High: 98.01% vaccinated; 1.86% with non-medical exemptions
• Sunset High: 98.20% vaccinated; 1.80% with non-medical exemptions
• Mountainside High: 98.03% vaccinated (1,775 students enrolled); 1.97% with non-medical exemptions

Bethany Elementary, which feeds into the Westview attendance area, reported a 97.42% measles vaccination rate with 2.58% non-medical exemptions.

Those local numbers contrast with the statewide picture. The OHA reported on May 28, that only 85.6% of Oregon kindergarteners were up to date on required vaccines for the 2025-2026 school year, a record low.

Nonmedical exemptions for the second MMR dose hit 9.4% statewide, nearly double the rate from a decade ago. More than one in three Oregon schools with 10 or more K-12 students report MMR vaccination rates below the 93% herd-immunity threshold.

"Although the vast majority of families in Oregon are still choosing to protect families through vaccination, the downward trends are deeply concerning," Dr. Howard Chiou, OHA's medical director for communicable diseases and immunizations, said in an OHA release on May 28 addressing the statewide kindergarten data. "We risk seeing the return of diseases such as measles and polio."

Exposure timeline

Anyone present at Sky Zone Beaverton between noon and 3 p.m. on July 18 should contact a health care provider to determine immunity status, according to the OHA.

Measles symptoms appear seven to 21 days after exposure, meaning someone infected at Sky Zone could show symptoms as late as Friday, August 8.

The first day of school for BSD students is August 25. Immunization records and the CIS form can be verified through BSD's School Nursing and Student Health office.
