Mountainside beat Glencoe 28-17 on Friday, Sept. 4, opening the 2026 high school football season with the only win among Bethany-area 6A programs.

Sunset fell 21-20 to Roosevelt, and Westview lost 28-7 to Grants Pass in the other Week 1 matchups, according to the Beaverton Valley Times scoreboard.

Mountainside 28, Glencoe 17

The Mavericks delivered on preseason expectations, handling Glencoe after 11 of 12 OregonLive panelists picked them to win. Mountainside had received 17 votes in the preseason 6A coaches poll and was ranked No. 21 in the state before a 52-13 scrimmage loss to Tualatin on Aug. 28 knocked them out of the Top 25.

Senior running back Reece Ballew figures to be central to the Mavericks' rebound. In that Tualatin scrimmage, Ballew carried 15 times for 104 yards and caught three passes for 94 yards, according to the Hillsboro News-Times. Quarterback Mason Severson went 21-of-41 for 242 yards, and receiver Kai Paler added seven catches for 77 yards in that game.

"He is poised to be one of the top backs in the state with his elusive running style and home-run ability," Mountainside head coach Keanon Lowe said of Ballew in an Aug. 27 OregonLive feature on the state's top players. Ballew, who runs a 10.76-second 100 meters, made the all-Metro League second team as a sophomore with 522 yards and six touchdowns before a shoulder injury cut his junior year short after three games.

Sunset 20, Roosevelt 21

The Apollos opened as heavy favorites and lost by a point. Eleven of 12 OregonLive panelists had picked Sunset.

Sunset faces an additional challenge this fall after all-state wide receiver and defensive back Griffin Ellingson transferred to Lake Oswego. As a junior at Sunset, Ellingson posted 61 catches for 780 yards and 13 touchdowns. He shared the 6A lead with seven interceptions.

Westview 7, Grants Pass 28

Westview struggled on both sides of the ball against a Grants Pass squad ranked No. 8 in the state. The Wildcats managed just 79 passing yards and 117 rushing yards, according to MaxPreps. Ten of 12 OregonLive writers picked Grants Pass, which had beaten then-No. 10 Nelson 49-48 in overtime the week before.

Head coach Dan Weaver's Wildcats travel to West Linn on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m. Week 2 opponents for Sunset and Mountainside had not been posted as of Sept. 5. All three Bethany-area teams compete in the Metro League alongside Beaverton, Jesuit and Southridge.
