A driver clocked at more than 100 mph on Highway 26 near NW Jackson School Road ended up hiding 20 feet up a tree before a sheriff's K9 tracked him down.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said the incident began about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, when a deputy tried to stop a black sedan speeding eastbound on Hwy 26 near the Bethany area. The driver fled.

Within minutes, a second deputy spotted a vehicle matching the description heading south on SW 185th Avenue and tried to pull it over. The driver again refused to stop, according to a WCSO media release published Monday, Aug. 31.

Deputies identified the vehicle as a stolen black 2015 BMW 335. They watched it turn onto SW 188th Court and drive into an apartment complex, where three people jumped out and ran.

The chase unfolded on roads Bethany and Cedar Mill residents use daily, starting on the Hwy 26 corridor and ending in a residential area off SW 185th Avenue.

Deputies set up a perimeter and called in a K9 team. Corporal Terry and K9 Griff responded and began tracking.

Griff found two passengers on a nearby porch first. The dog then continued into a marshy wooded area where the third suspect had fled. Griff located the suspect about 20 feet up in a tree. Deputies deployed a drone to pinpoint the exact spot.

After roughly 45 minutes, the driver agreed to come down and was taken into custody.

The sheriff's office identified the driver as Cairo Truth, 21, of Portland. Truth was arrested on charges of attempting to elude, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, reckless endangering and possession of a stolen vehicle. The charges are allegations; Truth is presumed innocent unless convicted.

The two passengers, Davian Delgadillo, 19, and Iris Cisneros-Martinez, 19, both of Hillsboro, were cited for their involvement and released, the sheriff's office said.

No court date for Truth has been announced.

Corporal Terry and K9 Griff are a familiar WCSO team. The pair also assisted with a separate K9 track involving a theft suspect in Aloha in May.
