Sunset's girls soccer team jumped into the 6A coaches poll at No. 5 after opening the season 3-0, the first in-season ranking for the Apollos this year.

The OSAAtoday poll published Wednesday, Sept. 9, by the Beaverton Valley Times, shows Sunset tied with West Linn at 33 points. The Apollos were unranked in the preseason poll published Aug. 25.

The rise matters locally because it came alongside a sharp fall for Metro League rival Mountainside. The Mavericks, who entered the season tied at No. 8 with 22 points, dropped out entirely after going 0-1-2 through the first week. Beaverton, the other team sharing that preseason No. 8 slot, also fell out at 1-0-1.

Westview landed just outside the top 10 with 13 votes and a 2-1 record. The Wildcats were unranked in the preseason poll as well.

Westview enters the season under new head coach Lainey Hulsizer, a Wildcats alumna who was a three-year varsity goalkeeper and helped lead the program to its only championship game appearance in 2008, according to the school's athletics page. Hulsizer spent the previous four years as head coach at Lincoln, compiling a 47-14-3 record and reaching the state semifinal. Returning honorable-mention selections Daniela Curtis, now a sophomore, and Maecca Thomas, now a junior, give Hulsizer a foundation to build on.

Sunset returns three players who earned Metro League all-league recognition last fall. Midfielder Aven Hoy, now a junior, was a first-team selection as a sophomore in 2025, according to OregonLive's all-league report. Goalkeeper Mikayla Williams, now a senior, earned second-team honors, and senior midfielder Sailor Lawson received honorable mention.

Mountainside's early stumble cost the Mavericks more than a ranking. The program lost several 2025 all-league contributors to graduation, including first-team midfielder Natalie Kawaguchi and second-team selections Katelyn Wallace and Isabel Shandy. Junior forward/midfielder Hailey Monson, a first-team pick last year, and senior defender Anya Rhode are the top returning honorees.

Jesuit holds the No. 1 spot with nine first-place votes and a 2-0 record. Lincoln sits at No. 2 at 1-1. Grant is No. 3 and Central Catholic No. 4.

The coaches poll does not affect the Oregon School Activities Association's RPI and Colley ratings used for playoff seeding.
