A 20-year-old Gresham man accused of posing as a teenager to sexually abuse children through youth basketball leagues now faces 66 new criminal charges across multiple counties in the Portland metro area.
A Multnomah County grand jury handed down the indictment against Ethan Bohanan on Tuesday, Oct. 6, bringing his total charges to more than 90, KGW first reported. Gresham Police Detective Adam Wright said at the Oct. 6 press conference that Bohanan's alleged activity "spanned multiple counties and many, many districts and organizations across counties," according to KATU. Wright declined to name specific leagues or school districts, saying that singling some out could create a false sense of security elsewhere.
The new 66-count indictment involves five additional victims, all between 15 and 16 years old. Charges include third-degree rape, third-degree sodomy, sexual abuse and producing sexually explicit images of a child, according to KPTV.
Bohanan had already faced 26 charges, including first-degree rape and first-degree sexual abuse, from a Gresham Police Department investigation that began in May. Police say a 14-year-old reported being sexually assaulted by someone she believed was her boyfriend. That person turned out to be Bohanan, who is listed in court records as 6 feet 3 inches tall and 320 pounds.
For at least a year, investigators allege, Bohanan claimed to be between 14 and 16 years old. He used a photoshopped ID card with a false birth date to access youth services and joined recreational basketball leagues that rented space from local schools, according to The Oregonian. He also claimed to attend local middle schools. Detectives confirmed he was never enrolled in any school district.
Wright said Bohanan built a network of real teenagers who unknowingly vouched for him. "He was very prolific and used his relationships with these children as cover to really have a broad reach," Wright said. Even when adults questioned his age, the network of youth around him helped sustain the deception, police said.
Bohanan, originally from Arkansas, has been held at the Multnomah County Detention Center since June 12. Police said he insisted he was a minor even after his arrest.
Officials said there are now six identified victims but believe more exist. An indictment is not a conviction, and Bohanan is presumed innocent until found guilty in court. Some of the new charges carry mandatory minimum sentences under Oregon's Ballot Measure 73.
Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Rachna Hajari said at the Oct. 6 press conference that children should not have to worry about someone pretending to be their age in order to abuse them.
