Girls flag football became an official Oregon high school sport on Monday, Oct. 12. Beaverton School District families could see varsity teams at area schools as early as spring 2027.
The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) Delegate Assembly voted at its Monday meeting to sanction girls flag football. Oregon became the 25th state to do so. The inaugural sanctioned season begins in spring 2027, following two years as an emerging activity.
The vote matters locally because BSD administrators said at the Oct. 6, 2025, delegate assembly meeting that adding girls flag football alongside boys volleyball could help the district balance Title IX obligations. The district had declined to field boys volleyball teams for the 2026 spring season, citing a $40,000-per-school cost and concerns that adding a boys sport without a comparable girls opportunity could create an imbalance.
Whether Westview, Sunset and Mountainside will field teams in spring 2027 has not been announced. No BSD statement on the flag football vote was available as of Oct. 12.
Girls flag football debuted in Oregon in 2023 with eight schools. By spring 2026, 57 varsity teams and more than 1,400 athletes competed, according to KGW, citing the OSAA meeting agenda.
That growth cleared the 50-school threshold required for a sanctioning vote.
Tualatin won the 2026 culminating event, defeating South Salem 32-26 at Liberty High School, then claimed the Best of the PNW Tournament hosted by the Seattle Seahawks in June.
Corporate backing has helped fuel the expansion. The Seahawks have donated $30,000 and equipment to help Oregon schools launch programs. Nike pledged home and away jerseys for every varsity team that competes in the first three sanctioned seasons.
Mario Bailey, the Seahawks' vice president of community engagement, said in a statement that the team is "thrilled to celebrate Oregon as the latest state to sanction the sport."
Liberty coach Rebecca Brisson, a driving force behind the sport in Oregon, told the Beaverton Valley Times in April that she expected the vote to pass. "It's a pretty low-cost sport," Brisson said at the time.
Nike's jersey pledge could lower startup costs further. Flag football will also appear at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and 425 colleges across 28 states offer the sport, according to the OSAA meeting presentation cited by KGW.
The OSAA said a plan book and schedule for the 2027 season will be released at a later date.
