Sunset's girls soccer team sits at No. 6 in the Oct. 5 OSAAtoday 6A coaches poll, carrying a 7-2 record and a five-game winning streak into the start of Metro League play.

The poll, published Monday by OSAAtoday, gave the Apollos 42 points. Sunset debuted at No. 5 (tied with West Linn) with a 3-0 record in the Sept. 9 poll and held that spot at 4-2 on Sept. 22 before slipping one position.

The coaches poll is for discussion purposes only. It has no impact on the Oregon School Activities Association's (OSAA) RPI and Colley ratings, which determine playoff seeding.

Jesuit tops the 6A poll at No. 1 with eight first-place votes, a 7-0-1 record and 116 points. The Crusaders are also a Metro League opponent Sunset will host Oct. 22.

Sunset has outscored opponents 17-12 this season, according to MaxPreps. The Apollos opened with wins over Grants Pass (1-0) and Sandy (2-1) before an 8-0 loss to Central Catholic on Sept. 8. They responded with five straight victories: 2-1 over Lakeridge, 3-1 over St. Mary's Academy, 4-0 at Roosevelt, 2-1 over Wilsonville and 3-0 over Hillsboro.

Central Catholic handed Sunset its worst loss. The Rams sit at No. 2 in the poll at 8-0-1 with 102 points.

The Apollos opened league play Monday, Oct. 5 at Beaverton. The rest of the Metro League slate lines up quickly: Southridge visits Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m., then Sunset travels to Westview on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. and to Mountainside on Monday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. before hosting Jesuit on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Westview and Mountainside, the other two area high schools, are not ranked in the top 10. Mountainside (5-2-2 entering this week) received 15 poll points at 3-1-2 on Sept. 22 but dropped out of the Oct. 5 poll. Westview (6-2-1 entering this week) received votes at 2-1 in the Sept. 9 poll but has not appeared since.

The OSAA's playoff timeline sets the 6A girls rankings freeze for Tuesday, Oct. 27. First-round playoff games are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 31, with the state championship final set for Saturday, Nov. 14 at Hillsboro Stadium.

Sunset has five league games to make its case before the rankings lock Oct. 27.
