Washington County deputies are setting up at two Bethany locations in October for the Sheriff's Office's annual Coffee with a Cop series.
The next session runs Thursday, Oct. 15, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Starbucks at 4720 NW Bethany Blvd. Free coffee will be provided. A first event was scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Laurel Parc Senior Center, 15850 NW Central Dr.
The Sheriff's Office described the events as informal, with no speeches or set agenda. Deputies will be on hand to answer questions and hear concerns from residents. Additional Coffee with a Cop events are scheduled in Beaverton and Cornelius on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
E-bike complaint form now online
Separately, the Sheriff's Office has released a fall safety guide that highlights a new tool for residents frustrated by reckless e-bike and e-scooter riding.
The office launched an online Traffic Complaint Form in July for reporting potentially illegal use of e-bikes, e-scooters and dirt bikes. Reports go directly to the Traffic Sergeant, who decides on enforcement. The office said the form helps keep dispatch phone lines open for emergencies.
The concern is not abstract. Data from the Oregon Health Authority shows e-bike-related injury visits have more than doubled over the past five years, according to the Sheriff's Office's safety page. E-bikes weigh 45 to 70 pounds, roughly double a standard bicycle, and when speed doubles, impact force quadruples.
Under Oregon law, Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes are limited to 20 mph. Class 3 e-bikes can reach 28 mph with pedal assist and must have a speedometer. E-dirt bikes are not street legal and may only be ridden on private property.
Dog license late fees waived through October
Washington County Animal Services is also offering a break for dog owners with expired licenses. Owners who renew before the end of October will not be charged a late fee, according to Cedar Mill News. Unlicensed dogs can draw a $160 citation.
The county's licensing system runs through DocuPet, which links each tag to an online pet profile and a lost-pet recovery service. A current rabies vaccination is required. Details are available on the county's dog licensing website.
Residents can call 911 for emergencies or 503-629-0111 for non-emergency reports. The Sheriff's Office is online at washingtoncountyor.gov/sheriff.
