Mountainside football is no longer ranked among Oregon's top 10 6A programs.
The Mavericks fell out of the OSAAtoday coaches poll released Tuesday, Oct. 6, after dropping to 2-3 on the season. Mountainside had been co-No. 10 in the poll a week earlier, sharing the spot with Ida B. Wells at 2-2.
Two straight losses did the damage. Lakeridge beat the Mavericks 34-22 on Sept. 18, and rival Westview followed with a 10-7 win at Mountainside High School on Friday, Oct. 2. The Wildcats' victory was their third in a row and left them tied atop the Metro League standings.
Mountainside climbed as high as No. 7 in the Week 1 poll after splitting its first two games. The Mavericks settled at No. 8 in Week 2 following a 2-1 start. A loss to Lakeridge dropped them to co-No. 10 in Week 4, and the Westview defeat pushed them off the list entirely.
Through five games the Mavericks have been outscored 140-109. Their two wins came against Glencoe (28-17 on Sept. 4) and West Salem (39-27 on Sept. 11). The 52-13 loss at Tualatin on Aug. 28 remains the widest margin on the schedule. In that game, senior running back Reece Ballew carried 15 times for 104 yards and caught three passes for 94 yards, while quarterback Mason Severson went 21 of 41 for 242 yards.
The coaches poll carries no weight in playoff seeding. The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) uses its own RPI and Colley ratings to fill the 6A bracket, which features 16 teams in the Championship field and eight in the Columbia Cup.
The Metro League receives two automatic qualifying spots, and nine at-large bids go to the next-highest-ranked teams statewide. Rankings freeze on Friday, Oct. 30.
Mountainside sits 0-1 in Metro League play and fourth in the league standings according to MaxPreps. Four conference games remain: at Jesuit on Friday, Oct. 9, home against Southridge on Friday, Oct. 16, at Sunset on Friday, Oct. 23, and home against Beaverton on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Oct. 23 trip to Sunset is the only remaining area rivalry game.
