Mountainside knocked off Westview in four sets Tuesday, Oct. 6, flipping the Metro League volleyball standings and pulling the Mavericks into a tie for second place with the Wildcats.
The Mavericks won 25-21, 18-25, 25-21, 26-24 at Westview High School, avenging a 3-1 loss to the Wildcats on Sept. 15. The victory extended Mountainside's winning streak to eight matches, according to MaxPreps.
Both teams now sit at 4-2 in league play, two games behind first-place Jesuit with four Metro League matches left. Mountainside improved to 8-6 overall. Westview fell to 16-7, according to the Beaverton Valley Times.
The loss is a setback for a Westview squad that entered the season ranked tied for No. 7 in the 6A preseason coaches poll, behind No. 1 Jesuit. The Wildcats are led by senior captains Ashlyn Pedersen, a first-team all-league hitter, Mady Lebeck, a first-team all-league libero, and Abbey Meier, a second-team all-league hitter.
Head coach Janelle Brandt said in a Sept. 14 season preview that the Wildcats' goal was clear: "We want to win a Metro League championship … you've got to get through Jesuit to do it."
Getting through the Jesuit Crusaders has been the problem for both area teams. Jesuit rallied from two sets down to beat Westview 3-2 on Sept. 24 at Westview High School, according to the Hillsboro News-Times. The Wildcats won the first two sets 30-28 and 27-25 before dropping the final three. Mountainside lost to Jesuit 3-2 on Sept. 17 in the teams' first league meeting.
Now Mountainside gets another shot. The Mavericks host Jesuit at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. A win would pull Mountainside within one game of first place with three league matches remaining.
Westview travels to Beaverton High School at 6:45 p.m. Thursday. After that, Mountainside's remaining league schedule includes a trip to Southridge on Oct. 12, a home match against Sunset on Oct. 14 and a road game at Beaverton on Oct. 20.
