Sunset's girls soccer team earned a No. 6 ranking in the latest Oregon 6A coaches poll after going unranked in the preseason.
The OSAAtoday coaches poll, published Monday, Oct. 5, listed Sunset at 7-2 with 42 poll points. The Apollos sat at No. 5 in the previous poll but slipped one spot after McMinnville (8-0-1, 45 points) jumped ahead.
The season-long arc tells the bigger story. Sunset did not appear in the preseason poll. After opening 3-0, the Apollos debuted at No. 5 (tied) in the Sept. 9 poll. They held that spot through the Sept. 22 poll, when their record stood at 4-2.
The poll is compiled by coaches for discussion purposes only. It has no impact on the Oregon School Activities Association's (OSAA) RPI and Colley ratings, which determine playoff seeding.
Sunset went 7-1 in nonleague play, according to MaxPreps. The Apollos beat Lakeridge 2-1 on Sept. 14 and Wilsonville 2-1 on Sept. 29. The lone nonleague loss was an 8-0 defeat to Central Catholic on Sept. 8. Central Catholic, the No. 2 team in the poll, is 8-0-1.
Metro League play has been tougher. Sunset opened conference action with a 1-0 loss at Beaverton on Oct. 5. That result came the same day the poll was published, so it was not reflected in the poll's record. Sunset's overall mark remains 7-2.
Four Metro League games remain over the next two weeks. Sunset hosts Southridge on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m., then travels to Westview on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. A trip to Mountainside follows on Monday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. The stretch closes with a home match against top-ranked Jesuit on Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Jesuit (7-0-1, 116 poll points) collected eight of 12 first-place votes. The Crusaders are the two-time defending 6A state champions and were ranked No. 2 nationally by United Soccer Coaches in September.
Sunset has scored 17 goals and allowed 13 through nine games. The Oct. 22 match against Jesuit closes the Apollos' regular-season Metro League schedule before OSAA playoff seeding is set.
