The man suspected of killing five people at a rural property near Forest Grove was found dead Sunday in Enumclaw, Washington, ending a manhunt that stretched across two states.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office, which provides law enforcement for the Bethany area, identified 36-year-old Benjamin Charles Parker as the suspect in the homicide investigation at 47350 NW Otis Lane in unincorporated Washington County. Enumclaw Police Department officers located Parker's vehicle behind a Safeway and found him deceased inside. Investigators believe he died by suicide.

"We do not believe there is a risk to the community," Sheriff Caprice Massey said at a press conference Sunday evening, Aug. 23, according to the Banks Post. "This was our suspect, and he died in Enumclaw, Washington."

How the investigation began

Deputies responded Saturday, Aug. 22, at approximately 5:27 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a vehicle fire at the Otis Lane property, about 30 miles west of Portland. Forest Grove Fire Department crews discovered human remains at the scene and called for law enforcement. Responders found five people dead, along with several domestic animals.

Massey, a 22-year veteran of the agency, called the scene the most complex she has witnessed in her career. Detective Shannon Wilde confirmed at Sunday's press conference that the case is being investigated as a quintuple homicide.

What investigators know

Parker was known to the five victims, according to the sheriff's office, though detectives have not disclosed his exact relationship to them or a possible motive. No arrests have been made. Investigators were still working as of Sunday to confirm the victims' identities and notify families. Their names, ages and causes of death have not been released.

The WCSO's official release said detectives do not believe the killings were random.

Multi-agency response

The investigation involves the Washington County Major Crimes Team, Oregon State Police Crime Lab, the ATF and more than a dozen other local agencies including the Forest Grove, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Cornelius and Tigard police departments.

In Enumclaw, the King County Sheriff's Office and Washington State Patrol assisted at the scene where Parker was found.
